Help Please – Is It Really This Hard to Cook Dry Beans?

Okay everyone, I’ve been trying some new frugal recipes and trying to find ways to cut costs even further in the kitchen. Several of the recipes I’ve tried or want to try call for black beans, so I thought it would be so simple to use dry beans instead of canned. I know my culinary skills are shaky at best, but it’s beans right? Well, like most of my other new attempts I failed miserably.

Twice.

I tried the quick soak method on the back of the bag. I actually let them soak for an hour and 15 mins after the 2 minute boil, and then simmered them for 2 hours. I might as well have served them straight from the bag. According to the directions that was twice what was needed. If anyone has any suggestions please e-mail me or leave a comment. I can use all the help I can get. Thanks!

    soak them overnight

  2. Soak for at least four hours – put in a crock pot overnight. Check the water in the crock pot at least twice. I try to use too much water because too little water is NOT good. The beans should be ready in six hours in the crock pot.

  3. I made beans the other night and I agree with Charlie they are better soaked for a few hours and put in the crockpot ofor at least 6 hrs. ps I am really liking your blog-first time reader-I have added you to my favorites. There are 3 of us (toddler)as well and I am pretty frugal about food. keep up the good work!

We don’t do black beans, so I’m not sure if it varies between kinds? DH has tried soaking, cooking on stove & in crock pot – for pinto & navy beans. His preference (I don’t do beans unless they are green beans) when he is cooking them is just to cook them on the stove several hours. Add salt close to the end to prevent cracking. Good luck!
