How to Get Blood Out of Clothing- Turkey’s Nighttime Nosebleed

I learned a great trick for getting blood out of clothing several years ago when hubby had to undergo 3 rounds of chemotheraphy and had some gushers as they tried to find new veins.  It sure came in handy this week.

Monday night I find Turkey sitting up in his bed crying.  This isn’t like him.  “What’s wrong, little bud”  “I messed my bed up”  I think he’s thrown up, but when I get down on his level to tell him it’s ok and to wait there, I see the dark tiger stripes all across his face. Nosebleed! We’ve been through this with our older kids, but this was Turkey’s first.

We have no washer and dryer in the apartment, so at 1:00 in the morning Hubby and I are trying to clean a massive amount of partially dried blood from Turkey and his bedding.  Sheet, mattress protector, PJs, comforter and Pooh bear all got a liberal dousing.  Once we got Turkey gently cleaned up and tucked into bed with spare bedding on, we moved to the bathroom to spend the next 30 mins with the hydrogen peroxide (HP) and OxiClean.  The comforter didn’t even need to go in the wash after a bit of HP.  The sheet got a cold water rinse before having HP poured on it.  The mattress protector also got rinsed before soaking overnight in the tub with OxiClean.   Both comforter and mattress look great after a run through the washing machine Thursday.

Now Pooh bear had been forgotten in the bedroom and by the next morning he had some very ugly thick black scars from the previous nights events.  I didn’t even bother trying to clean him up.  I just threw him in with the laundry, writing him off as a lost cause and feeling thankful it wasn’t a favorite stuffed animal.  But Nana takes one look at him Thursday and says “Hydrogen peroxide will fix it”.  I really was thinking “yeah right”, but after a good dousing and a run through the washer, you can’t tell the poor bear was ever traumatized by an onslaught of toddler nosebleed!

So the next time Walgreens has Hydrogen Peroxide on sale for $.33 with an in ad Q, I’ll be buying several bottles as fillers for the next nosebleed, since it turns out the stuff is good for more than the occasional scraped knee.
