I’m Finally Going to Try Fly Lady

A few years ago a friend told me about Fly Lady. Fly Lady is a site with daily tasks to help you stay on top of managing your home.  Such a simple, easy to follow plan, but I didn’t commit to it. I didn’t even try. Then again last year someone mentioned Fly Lady. Did I try it? Of course not, that would be too easy. A few months ago a reader even suggested that I try it. By then I was overwhelmed with managing apartment living with 2 children and needed it badly. The only thing holding me back then was that we were in the process of moving.

Fast forward to today, and Heather at Family Friendly Frugality is doing a Fly Lady challenge and giving me a bit of peer pressure to get me started. According to the first step of fly lady, I’m supposed to clean my kitchen sink until it shines. Hmmm. I’ve got exactly 3 hours and 13 minutes left to make that happen. (ya’ll all know that I do not profess to be much of a housekeeper) I think I’ll figure out a gadget for the sidebar to track my progress. Anyone else need a bit of peer pressure and want to join us?

  1. I love it!! I have never heard of it but I am going to do it!

  2. I have been “Flying” for about 3 years now. It’s so much more than just cleaning your house. I can honestly say that I think this flying has helped me with my general anxiety…so much so that I haven’t had to take any maintenance meds for it in about a year and a half. Not sure if it was because the house was cleaner so I wasn’t as stressed or if it helped me to see past the overwhelmed so I could get something done.

It’s not peer pressure, it’s support from like minded folks who just needed a little encouragement from time to time.

  3. @Jennifer glad I won’t be the only new one at this. Although I’m thinking you probably have a much better handle on it all having been home for a while with your oldest.

Thanks Becky! I may just have to try some of your recipes soon.

  4. What a good idea! How do we sign up?

  5. It’s totally free Jeri! Just follow her baby steps plan @ http://www.flylady.net/pages/begin_babysteps.asp I’m going to try to get up some sort of chart on the sidebar to track my progress and to help be a reminder to those who are joining me on this.

Today’s step is to get up and get dressed (and to shine your sink before you go to bed). Getting dressed may be simple, but only accomplished about half the time around here. Feel better already :-)

  6. I did flylady years ago and it was just what I needed. The problem was I didn’t stick with it and I don’t want to sign up again. I will just go to her site daily and read it. I need someone to keep me accountable and I’m sure you do to. Maybe it will help me finally beat the clutter monster.

So…I have a black granite-look sink with a matte finish. Your thoughts on that? My sink cannot shine!

I emailed fly-lady a couple/few years back with that info & never received a reply.

  8. LOL! I think in that situation it would mean empty and clean. You remember our old farm sink? White porcelain. A shine of that sink would mean cleaning it and using a magic eraser to take off all the marks. Now, my sink just “shines” by being empty and that’s good enough for me!

  9. Bobbi Rife says:

I tried Fly Lady for awhile, but found that I was constantly cleaning!!! So, I took her basic plan, and modified it to meet my schedule. I made the cards, organized and prioritized them, but on a much reduced level than what she suggests. It works for me! Now my house is cleaner than it used to be, but I don’t feel like I’m spending all my time cleaning!
