May and June Savings Review and Mid Year Stats

The household budget for our family is $500 a month and includes all groceries, household products, diapers, health and beauty, clothing, gifts, decorations and newspapers.
A little on the lean side? Perhaps, but it works for our family.
Whether your number is $300 or $1000, you should do what works for your
family.
In June:
I spent: $224.24
I saved: $389.47
Extra money I made: $616.22

In May:
I spent: $183.63
I saved: $274.22
Extra money I made: $23.01

At the midway point this year I had saved only 40% of my yearly goal of $17,000 for 2011.  We lived mostly from our stockpile for February, March and April.   That cut into my savings, but at the same time reduced our spending which is not necessarily a bad thing.  Our monthly spending budget of $500 x 6 = $3,000 and I only spent $1,836.  I wonder if I should count the $1164 difference as savings? Thoughts anyone?

  1. Absolutely count it as savings! In fact, I can’t believe you haven’t crunched the numbers of how much that would save you if you put that money on the priciple of one of your mortgages or in an actual savings investment like a Roth IRA. You can run those figures as you are counting sheep.

  2. LOL, you know me too well- I’ve already run the #s (but most people aren’t interested in that). Except we need that money to put gutters on the house back in Arkansas. It needs a new paint job too but that will have to wait until next year. :-(
