Out of Sight, Out of Mind

This canvas bin is sitting on the top shelf of my kitchen cabinet.  Any guesses what I store in it?
It’s not easy to access, although not impossible.  I have it stored there on purpose because I don’t want to be able to see what’s inside it and cause my brain to think I need it.

This bin is my chocolate stash and next to it is another bin with my “other candy” in it.  My theory (and well proven over the years) is that if we think “I want a Butterfinger bar” we know where to get it. But if we are just opening the cabinets in search of something to snack on we’ll get something we see instead of making an extra effort to get out something from up high or far back in the cabinets/fridge.

The same principle can be applied to snack foods for the kids and special food items in the fridge.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind.  Where can you apply this principal in your own home?

  1. We have to be very careful with this approach. I do like you hiding the stuff I don’t want the kids to know where it is, but my husband and I both need to see things in order to remember things, so that makes for a lot of clutter, but then whenever we have someone coming over his approach to cleaning is to toss everything in a box and stash it somewhere, usually never to be found again LOL.

  2. great idea!

  3. We do this with candy, too! The only trouble is if you store it where vermin can get it, you may not realize they’re in there for a while! This happened when we put candy in a bag on the closet floor, and mice got into the house via the air duct that runs through that closet. They opened and nibbled one of each variety of candy–very polite, but they also pooped all over the floor. We keep the candy in a plastic box in a high-up drawer now.

  4. I still remember the day the kids coming to me and saying the KNEW where my candy stash was. In the crockpot. Ha. It was. Pros and cons to having a stash and out of sight out of mind motto … I don’t hide it anymore, but the kids know not to touch without asking first. Hubby, on the other hand, well, some men just never learn :)
