Homemaking Plan Week 1 of 2012

One purpose of my blog has always been to help me be more organized at home and with my shopping.  When I started writing it I began posting my weekly menu plan, which has now become second nature for our family.  We know what meals we have to choose from for the week and for the most part stick to that plan.  When we’ve finished the list we know that it’s time to eat leftovers from the fridge.

Now that I’ve mastered menu planning, I’m moving on to being better organized with my homemaking skills (yes, I use the term very lightly!)  As I sit down to write the menu for the week, I’ll also think about the tasks to accomplish for this week.  I’ll make 3 lists:

  • 1 of maintenance tasks to post
  • 1 of personal tasks such as bills to pay, people to call, and activities for the week
  • and 1 of cleaning items that I need to accomplish for the week.

I’ve tried homemaking plans before, but I quickly become overwhelmed
with the magnitude of chores to be completed each week
. I feel like I can never even accomplish the tasks for one day, much less an entire week. It’s obvious
that those ladies keep much more perfect homes than I do LOL. I’m hoping
that this list making and posting will help me stay on top of those
less common tasks and hopefully will encourage you to complete some less
common tasks each week without being overwhelmed.  Maybe after the kids
are all grown I’ll be able to master those other homemaking plans :-)

This week’s maintenance chores:

  1. Prepare 5 lbs. taco meat and 10 lbs. chicken to chop and pull for future meals.
  2. Clean blinds in living areas of the house
  3. Put several items on Craigslist or Ebay to sell
  4. Put away all Christmas items
  5. Unload van and put away all items from our trip last week
  6. 15 minutes daily to tidy things up after the kids go to bed

See?  Nothing too involved, just things that will help me stay on top of things at home instead of letting the week slip away from me because none of those things seem pressing to be done immediately.

Talking about list-making, I thought I might share a shopping iphone app that has been extremely helpful for me in saving time and effort in creating a shopping list. It’s called Grocery IQ. It takes a bit to set up your frequently purchased items in your ‘favorites’ list, but once that’s all done you just add them to your ‘list’, which is your weekly shopping trip list, and you’re set to go. You can even sync it with your partner so you both have the list at-hand.

Good luck with your home-making! There is always more to do around the house it seems, even with a list! : )
