Live Below The Line

The Live Below the Line challenge runs for 5 days, from May 7th – 11th.  The challenge is to feed yourself on less than $1.50 a day- the amount a U.S. person living in poverty would have to spend.

I’ve chosen to support Opportunity International with my challenge. Donations can be made through the Live Below the Line campaign page.  You can also get involved by participating in the challenge- can you feed yourself on just $1.50 a day?

Day 1 and Day 2 of the challenge my total was $1.38 each day.  For the most part I ate a normal menu, with the exception of no M&Ms.  After 3 days I’m suffering from some major withdrawal but otherwise I’m doing fine.  :-)

Today I ate:

Breakfast
1& 1/4 servings of Raisin Bran @ .29
5 oz. milk @ .08
Total: $.37

Lunch
We didn’t have any lunchmeat and Little Turkey didn’t want peanut butter, so I decided to fix grilled chicken salads.  It was a hassle to weigh everything I was putting on my salad, but I did it anyway.

3.5 oz lettuce @ .17
.75 oz cheese @ .14
1 oz tomato @ .06
2.5 oz grilled chicken (would be 5 oz raw) @ .40
1 serving ranch dressing @ .06
Total: .83
It’s a good thing I skipped the yogurt and we were out of croutons because I didn’t imagine it would cost that much!
Dinner
Seeing as I only had .30 left in today’s budget, I knew I wouldn’t be able to eat dinner with the family.
I opted for chicken nuggets that I got on super shocker sale for $2, the leftover baked beans and part of a banana. It was enough to fill me up and mostly stay with in budget.  After I sliced the pears for the rest of the family I did eat about 1 oz from around the cores (no one else will do that but I hate to see it go to waste).
1 serving of chicken nuggets @ .17
1/2 serving of baked beans @ .08
4.5 oz banana (I had to cut it that small) @ .16
1 oz of pear @ .01 :-)

     Total: .42

That puts me at $1.62 for the day, and an average of $1.46 for the week.  It’s not looking too good for the pizza later in the week- especially since the gallon of milk I just got was $1.20 more expensive than the one I’ve been using for breakfast :-(. I’m still making that my goal.
Check back tomorrow night for the Day 4 update!

It’s still very impressive, even though you were a bit off today!
