Pipe Cleaners Fine Motor and Reading Preschool Busy Activity

please ignore my horribly dirty kitchen floor :-)

I really wanted to tackle the pile of dishes to be handwashed in my sink this weekend.  Little One was having a needy day though so I knew the only way to accomplish the task at hand was to get her busy with a new activity.  I chose the pipe cleaner stuffing activity this time.  I’ve been collecting oatmeal, grits and pringles cans and have punched various sized holes in the lids with a leather punch. I cut 6 colored pipe cleaners* in half and gave them to her to put through the lid into the container.  She loved this!  When she put all 12 pieces in she opened up the container, took them out, and did  all again.  I don’t know how many times she did it, but she spend a full 20 minutes on this activity – woot woot!

Little Turkey was quite jealous of it too, so I adapted it for him to use.  I used a sharpie marker to put an upper case and lower case r, o, y, g, b, p next to the holes.  He was to put the colored pipe cleaners into the correct holes by sounding out their color name.  They stick in the holes so it was easy for me to check it when he finished. He still struggles a bit with B and P, but did very well.  It took him about 6 or 7 minutes total, but he enjoyed it. Of course then he asked if he could keep it to use as a pretend spaghetti set to cook with   LOL

This set is very inexpensive to make.  A 20 pack of pipe cleaners is around $1 so you’ll get 3 sets from it. I happened to by a package for $.30 at Target a while back when they were clearancing out the brown dot section :-)

*If you’re concerned about the sharp edges on the pipe cleaners you can always add a drop of hot glue to cover them.  I didn’t do this and Little One didn’t have any problems.
