April 2013 Simple Homemaking Plan

Last year I began picking 2-3 tasks around the house to accomplish each week.  These were tasks that would typically get overlooked as they don’t necessarily affect the daily functioning of our home (cleaning fan blades, blinds, organizing closets etc). Sometimes they didn’t get accomplished, but without setting the goal, I’m sure that very little would have been accomplished! While it really helped me, one problem I found was that some weeks the tasks were completed quickly and I’d “take some time off”.  But the next week there would be too much to do with our schedule and I’d get behind.  For 2013 I’ve written out 6 months of my homemaking plan so that I can look ahead and do extra when there’s extra time, or when I know we’ll be out of town soon. While breaking tasks into bite sized pieces is good, I’m finding it’s still important to see the big picture.

You can see my homemaking plan for January – June 2013 here in calendar format (subject to change of course!)

Let me just tell you how horrible my house became towards the end of March!  It was nasty and dirty and cluttered.  I was to the point that I was going to pay someone to come work alongside me to get it cleaned up.  The few people I asked couldn’t make it work with their schedules and I slowly began to make progress.  Just a few minutes every day helps a lot – plus inviting people over to visit while I clean helps too! We had Little One’s 3rd birthday party here over the weekend, so here’s hoping I can continue the “few minutes every day” plan and keep the house in decent condition this month.  You’ll see a organizing and decluttering theme since garage sale season is in full swing around here.

For the month of April these are my goals:

  • Week 14
    • clean out/organize master bedroom closets, culling items for garage sale
    • clean out/organize master bedroom and bathroom, culling items for garage sale
    • treat carpet stains (from March plan)
  • Week 15
    • windex windows
    • organize junk drawers in kitchen
    • move veggie seedlings to pots outside
  •  Week 16
    • clean out/organize kid’s closets, culling items for garage sale
    • clean out/organize kid’s bedrooms, culling items for garage sale
    • polish all wood furniture (from March plan)
  • Week 17
    • flip/rotate mattresses and treat any stains
    • wash all comforters and throws
    • “till” flower beds (from March plan)
  • Week 18
    • clean out/organize our office/guestroom closet, culling items for garage sale
    • clean out/organize laundry room and cabinets, culling items for garage sale

What extra household chores and tasks do you hope to accomplish in April?  Perhaps there are some I should add to my plan!
