If you have money to spare in your budget, consider pre-buying gift cards from restaurants and retailers that are offering promotional gift cards or coupons for purchasing a gift card. Many stores are offering a free $5 gift card for every $25 that you purchase before Christmas. That’s a 20% return on your money! I’m not suggesting that you go on a wild and crazy shopping spree for gift cards, but do take a look at the promotional offers available and consider how much you’d typically spend at those retailers/restaurants throughout the next year.
Many retailers with gift card displays offer bonuses in store for purchasing through them as well. Last year Brookshire’s offered $10 in store credit for every $50 of retailer gift cards purchased. That was one of the sweetest deals I’ve ever come upon!
Be sure to call ahead to your local store to verify that they are participating in the national promos.
