2013 School Supply Shopping Trip Savings

Yesterday I made a quick trip out to Office Depot and Office Max.  Since I had both kids with me, the trip took a bit longer at about 45 minutes.  When I took a look at my weekly sale price comparison chart for school supplies, I could see there were several things worth making the effort to get on sale.

I’m going to show you a break down of costs and compare that to the prices at Target or Walmart.  Even if you don’t shop every week or get the best prices on everything, you can still save a decent amount of money and make it worth your time to shop a few different stores.

Office Max purchases
2 poly binders – $.50 each = $1
3 Expo marker 4 pks – $1 each = $3
3 8 pk Dixon pencils – $.10 each = $.30
3 10 pk Papermate pens – $.10 each = $.30
Price paid = $4.60

Office Depot purchases
9 poly folders with brads – $.25 each = $2.25
3 plastic pencil pouches – $.01 each = $.03
3 10 pk pens – $.25 each = $.75
1 24 ct. generic crayons = $.25
Price paid = $3.28

Total price paid at both stores = $7.88 before tax

Walmart price
2 poly binders $.50 each = $1
3 Expo marker 4 pks – $2.50 = $7.50
3 8 pk  pencils – $.97/20 pencils (generic)= $1.16
3 10 pk pens (generic) – $.25/4 = $1.88
9 poly folders with brads – $.50 each = $4.50
3 plastic pencil pouches – $.47 each = $1.41
3 10 pk pens (generic) – $.25/4 = $1.88
1 24 ct. generic crayons = $.25
Total comparable Walmart purchase price = $19.58 before tax for a savings of $11.70 for my 45 mins of effort.

Target price
2 poly binders – $1 each = $2
3 Expo marker 4 pks – $2.54 each = $7.62
3 10 pk  pencils- $1.24/20 = $1.49
3 10 pk pens (generic) – $.97 = $2.91
9 poly folders with brads – $.50 each = $4.50
3 plastic pencil pouches – $.97 each = $2.91
3 10 pk pens (generic) – $.97 = $2.91
1 24 ct. generic crayons = $.25
Total comparable Target purchase price = $24.59 – $1.23 (5% redcard discount) = $23.36 before tax for a savings of $15.48 for my 45 mins of effort.

Considering that my hubby would have to work  an extra hour in order for me to spend $20 at Walmart, I am more than happy to spend 45 mins stopping at 2 extra stores to save nearly $12 and his extra hour!
