It hasn’t been too long since I started blogging at A Thrifty Penny with just the bare bones. Little by little I’ve been learning and adding things to the site. I’ve added e-mail subscriptions and RSS feeds, widgets, backgrounds and headers, and a facebook fan page. I’m still learning- hence why the blog doesn’t look perfect, but I think it’s at least navigable. Thank you to all my family and friends who started following this little bitty (how fitting is {Read More}

This Week’s Dinners 9/27 Average Cost $5.00
My goal is to provide dinner for my family for an average of $5 except on special occasions. We don’t have to eat beans and rice to accomplish this goal! We typically only cook a main dish 4 or 5 times a week, so each main dish cooked will be for 4-6 servings, and the leftovers will be for easy dinners on the weekend, or to freeze for another week. This cuts down on cleaning, cooking, and meal planning- saving {Read More}
Free Zoo Admission October 2nd and 3rd
If you live in the Tyler area, October 2nd and 3rd are the annual phone book recycle days at the Caldwell Zoo. Bring an outdated phone book in to recycle and receive free admission for that day. You’ll need one phone book per guest. This would make a great outing for any age. The current hours are 9-4; 7 days a week.

We met Jack Hanna!
Our family loves to visit the zoo. When we moved to Tyler this year we decided to get a family pass so that we could pop in for an hour or so whenever we wanted to. Turkey can’t seem to get enough of East Africa, the tigers, and strangely enough- the flamingos. Well, one of the great perks to having the family zoo pass is that we got to attend a presentation by Jack Hanna himself! I requested our {Read More}
