Last week I talked about making economical food choices if you’re eating fast food because it’s fast and not because you want the food. Perhaps it would have been logical to first write about how to avoid fast food altogether. Regardless, here are some tips: Have a weekly menu plan for dinner that covers every meal, whether with a new meal or left overs. Have a backup plan like spaghetti or breakfast for dinner (and always have those foods on {Read More}

Do You Like the Fast or the Food? Things That Break the Budget and How to Avoid Them
I’m beginning a new series on Thursdays called Items That Can Break the Budget and How to Avoid Them. You’re in a rush because you didn’t have a menu plan, or life just happened. You decide to get fast food for dinner. Stop and ask yourself: Am I getting fast food because it’s fast or because I like the food? If you’re going for the food, then by all means indulge yourself with your favorite meal. But if you’re going {Read More}
How to Plan Your Weekly Dinner Menu
There are several ways to plan a weekly menu: eat exactly what you’re in the mood for this week (no plan) plan to eat what’s on sale this week plan to eat what’s in your cabinets and fridge/freezer this week There is no right or wrong way to plan, but there are costs associated with each plan or lack thereof. If you have no plan for your meals each week you’ll be paying shelf price for most items you want {Read More}
What Items Do You Spend the Most Coupon Time On?
When you’re just starting out with couponing, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and burn out quickly (especially if you’re trying to do the binder system instead of whole inserts, but that’s another post). :-)I recommend that you start out playing the drugstore game at CVS or Walgreens and just pick a couple of items each week that are free or cheap to purchase. If the scenarios I post are too elaborate, remember that I will write one with your shopping {Read More}
Playing the Target Game
Hands down, Target is my favorite store. I love the nice decor items and more trendy furnishings over what Walmart has to offer. Overall Target is just a much nicer store with reasonable prices. I mostly just look and appreciate how nice their things are. Sometimes I get to buy. When I get a $25 Target GC from family for Christmas I love seeing how far I can stretch those dollars on things I will enjoy. Shopping the end caps for {Read More}
Out of Sight, Out of Mind
This canvas bin is sitting on the top shelf of my kitchen cabinet. Any guesses what I store in it? It’s not easy to access, although not impossible. I have it stored there on purpose because I don’t want to be able to see what’s inside it and cause my brain to think I need it. This bin is my chocolate stash and next to it is another bin with my “other candy” in it. My theory (and well proven {Read More}
Video- How to Give a Boy a Haircut
This is a picture of our little Turkey about a month after his first hair cut. (sorry for the closed eyes but due to his glaucoma his eyes were still extremely sensitive to light) He was only 8 months old at the time of this picture and he already needed another cut! It pained me to think of paying $12+ every month for the next 18 years to have his hair cut. Especially because there was always a spot or {Read More}
How Do You Write a Walgreens Scenario? – Reader Question Series
If you’re not familiar with shopping at Walgreens, you’ll want to read this tutorial before reading this post on how to write your own scenarios. I’ve had many readers ask me how I write scenarios. The honest answer is it’s just a puzzle to me- a mathematical game. But there is some logic to the process so I’ll start with this pic of how I usually write out the deals I want to put in my scenario. Mind you that {Read More}
Do You Wonder- "Should I Refinance My Home?"
Let me preface this post by saying that I am not a certified public accountant, nor am I an accountant. I am simply someone who loves calculations and loves to help people save money. This post is an explanation of how I would determine if my family should refinance a mortgage. photo © 2010 nikcname | more info (via: Wylio) I’ve heard it said that you should only refinance if you can save more than 1/2 a %. I’ve also {Read More}
